Transform Your Loose Leash Walking With These Expert Tips
Loose leash walking made simple...
I am going to keep this short and simple. Dogs need guidance, consistency, and clarity. These tips can help you minimize confusion and promote a beautiful loose leash walk!
- Reward on the same side the dog is on - when we reward our dog from the opposite side we can cause the dog to step in front of us expecting a treat.
- Use the environment as a reinforcer for a loose leash - when your dog isn’t pulling, release your dog to sniff as the reward.
- Let them have freedom – Have some walks be on a long line and don’t micromanage them.
- Check the length of your leash - how long is your leash? Sometimes changing from a 6 foot leash to an 8 foot leash can change the game. Certain dogs who need less freedom benefit from a 4 foot leash.
- Practice inside before doing it outside - practice these skills in a calm environment first. Once they can do it consistently, move on to practicing outside.
- Talk to your dog - dogs are smart but they can’t not read our mind. Give them direction by telling them when you are stopping, turning, etc.
